President Rinkēvičs in Rome

Italian President Mattarella welcomed the Latvian Head of State at the Quirinal Palace. President Rinkēvičs met also with Prime Minister Meloni and the Presidents of the Italian Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. 

On 15 May 2024 the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, welcomed at the Quirinal Palace the President of the Republic of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, for an official visit. It was President Rinkēvičs first visit to Italy since his inauguration last July.

Italy and Latvia are bond by a “relationship of deep cooperation, a concrete and growing friendship” commented President Mattarella upon the arrival of his Latvian counterpart at the Quirinal Palace. He then referred to his visit to Riga in 2018 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the independence of Latvia: “those are days I cannot forget”, commented Mattarella in a statement reported by Italian news agency ANSA.

In the afternoon President Rinkēvičs met with the President of the Italian Senate, Ignazio La Russa, at Giustiniani Palace and with President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Lorenzo Fontana, at Montecitorio Palace.

On Thursday 16 May Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni welcomed President Rinkēvičs at Chigi Palace. Their meeting focused on the excellent bilateral cooperation between Italy and Latvia, particularly in the fields of defence and security. The two leaders also discussed the top priorities on the European and international agenda, including migration issues. They also shared their commitment to continue strengthening a comprehensive approach to Euro-Atlantic security.
