The movie

For “The Captain” Matteo Garrone was awarded with the Silver Lion as Best director at the 80th Venice Film Festival. The movie tells the story of two boys, Seydou and Moussa, who decide to leave Dakar and journey through Africa and the Mediterranean to reach Europe. A contemporary Odissey through the perils of the desert, the horrors of human traffickers’ detention camps and the dangers of the sea.

“The epic journey”, comments director Matteo Garrone on Filmitalia, “of Seydou and Moussa through Africa, with all its perils, to chase a dream called Europe is the heart of the movie”. “We began”, Garrone adds, “by listening to the actual accounts of people who have survived this infernal ordeal, and we decided to orient the camera from their perspective so as to tell this contemporary odyssey from their point of view. Io Capitano thus offers a sort of reverse shot compared to the images we’re used to seeing from our western perspective in an attempt to finally give voice to those who don’t usually have one”.
