The Deputy Head of Mission

Born in Turin in 1993, Federico Palmieri graduated from Liceo Classico Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour in 2012. He earned a summa cum laude degree in International Sciences, Development, and Cooperation from the University of Turin in 2015. He continued his studies at the University of Rome “La Sapienza,” where he obtained a summa cum laude master’s degree in International Relations in 2017 with a thesis on the notion of State identity in Constructivist theory.

He joined the diplomatic service in 2018 with the rank of Second Secretary. He served at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation’s headquarters until 2022, first at the Directorate General for Cultural and Economic Promotion and Innovation and then in the newly established Directorate General for Public and Cultural Diplomacy. In both roles, he worked on promoting Italian culture and creativity abroad.

During this period, he worked on the coordination of the network of the Italian Cultural Institutes and contributed to the design and implementation of numerous projects and initiatives aimed at promoting Italy in the world. Among the most significant projects in which he was involved are the Italy-China Year of Culture and Tourism, the cultural program of the Italian Pavilion at Expo Dubai, the nation-branding campaign beIT, and the Sanremo Giovani World Tour in collaboration with Italian State Broadcaster RAI.

Since September 2022, he has been serving at the Embassy of Italy in Riga as First Secretary and Deputy Head of Mission. In his capacity as “second in command”, he assists and supports the Head of Mission in the political sector and oversees the coordination of the Consular Section. He is responsible for the Promotion of Italy Section, which coordinates all cultural, economic, scientific, and integrated promotional activities of Italy in Latvia.

Between 2022 and 2024 alone, together with his team he has organised over 120 events and initiatives for the Embassy in Riga, including exhibitions, concerts, contemporary theater and dance performances, artist residencies, and film screenings. In 2024, he curated the design and implementation of Caffè Young Italy – a series of ten public conversations between young Italian and Latvian creatives and professionals on the relationship between tradition and innovation. The project won the European section of the second edition of the Festival of Italy: Capitals of Italian Creativity in the World competition organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy. In 2025, he coordinates on behalf of the Embassy the organization of two major Italian exhibitions in Riga, facilitating contacts between the Italian and Latvian museums involved: “Palazzo Madama. Arts and Crafts from Italy from the 6th to the 19th Century”, a collaboration between the Art Museum Riga Bourse and Palazzo Madama – Fondazione Torino Musei; “Light from Italy. From Fattori to Morandi”, organized by the Latvian National Museum of Art in cooperation with the Uffizi Galleries.

In addition to Italian, he speaks fluent English and French and is learning Latvian and Russian. In his free time, he enjoys running, cinema and pop music.
