WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF THEFT OR LOSS OF AN IDENTITY DOCUMENT

In the event of the theft or loss of an identity document, a report must be filed immediately with the local Police Authorities.

If the person concerned is an Italian citizen not residing in Latvia and is in an emergency situation due to the theft or loss of an identity document, the Embassy of Italy in Riga may issue an Emergency Travel Document (ETD) to allow return to Italy or to the country of permanent residence. For complete information on how to obtain an ETD, click here.

Please be advised that the ETD can only be issued during office hours. If the theft or loss occurs during the weekend, the document can only be issued starting from the following Monday. In such cases, it is essential to present the police report confirming the theft or loss of the passport or identity card, issued by the Latvian authorities. No appointment is required.

It should also be noted that some airlines may allow boarding for return to Italy or to the country of residence upon presentation of the police report alone. It is strongly recommended to verify this option directly with the airline.
