The Art Academy of Latvia in Riga recently hosted a masterclass by Guicciardo Sassoli de’ Bianchi Strozzi, organized under the patronage of the Embassy of Italy in Latvia.

The lecture, titled “The First Woman Art Critic: Margherita Sarfatti, the Biennales, Futurism, and Italian Exhibitions Worldwide (Including Latvia),” explored the profound influence of Margherita Sarfatti on the 20th-century art scene. The art critic and historian analyzed the pivotal role of Sarfatti—a Jewish intellectual of Venetian origin—in promoting the Italian avant-garde.

Key points of the discussion included: the connection between the “Novecento Italiano” movement and Futurism, the international projection of Italian art across the globe, the specific historical and artistic links between Italy and Latvia.
